Connor had spent much of his adult life on one military base or another. They had a rhythm to them that usually coincided with the purpose for which the base had been designed. Camp Alpha was no different, at least in theory. It was a military base, but at the same time, it was also a place of research. The subtle differences at Camp Alpha stemmed from the fact that the NEIIS were there.

After leaving the NEIIS city, Connor and the others were still coming to grips with the fact that they’d discovered yet another faction of NEIIS that had been successfully hiding their presence from everyone. They had no idea how long the NEIIS had been hiding underground, and Connor had decided not to share this information with Raylore or the others of his kind. They’d been just as surprised by the ryklar attack as the colonists were. Currently, the information that their attackers hadn’t been merely ryklars was known only to a few CDF personnel, and Connor intended to keep it that way for a little while longer.

It’d been ten hours since their return to Camp Alpha. He’d checked in with Lenora and then resisted the urge to contact her again. He hadn’t told her about the recent development, but he would. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust her; he just didn’t want her to have to deny knowledge of something until he was ready to share it with the Office of NEIIS investigations. He had every intention of bringing the ONI into this, but first, he wanted his own people in the CDF to run their own analysis. They’d share their findings with the ONI in short order.

Connor had borrowed Nathan’s office at Camp Alpha since Nathan was at Sierra, and he checked his messages again. Flint had checked in to say that they’d taken the arch components back to the CDF base near New Haven. Connor had sent the NEIIS body to the CDF base by Delphi, which housed extensive biological research facilities.

Connor glanced at his messages once again and noticed that Dash hadn’t checked in. He wasn’t overdue, and Connor had sent a squad of CDF soldiers with him, so he should be well protected. Plus, he knew Dash had instituted a training regimen of his own that included hand-to-hand combat and a wider breadth of knowledge of civilian weapons. Connor couldn’t fault the young man for wanting to be prepared, but he’d hoped there wouldn’t be a situation where Dash had to use that training.

An alert appeared on his personal holoscreen, indicating that his next meeting was due to start in a few minutes, so Connor stood up and left the office. He went to the conference room and saw Diaz speaking with Major Brooks. He thought Diaz looked a bit tired. Darius Cohen and Kurt Johnson were also in the room. Brooks and Diaz stood up and saluted when Connor entered, then sat back down. Connor greeted Nathan, who, along with his staff, was on a video feed displayed on the central holoscreen.
